Easter Celebration Ideas You Will Want to Use in 2025
Traditional Easter Activities
There are so many traditional Easter activities that most people are probably familiar with. If you’re here looking for something new to do, don’t count these out. They’ve been around for a long time for a reason and you can always put your own spin on them. Many of the traditional activities that my family has always enjoyed include:
- Dying Easter eggs
- Easter Egg hunts
- Easter baskets
- The Easter bunny
- and of course, there’s always a big meal
If you’re anything like me, you are more than likely looking at these options and wondering one of a couple things. You might be thinking, “Why is this even a thing?” or “How do I make this my own this year?”
How To Celebrate Easter As A Christian
You might wondering about some of the sillier sides of how our culture celebrates Easter and if they are for you or not. If so, I have an awesome resource that helps break down some of the liturgy behind the tradition as it relates to our Christian faith.
I learned about this book, Sacred Seasons by Danielle Hitchen, in a homeschool mom group a year or two ago and have loved digging into it as we approach holidays. I like to make sure I’m really teaching my kids about the true meaning of what we celebrate. In this book it includes a recipe for resurrection rolls to make with your kids, and even explains the history behind the Easter egg, dying eggs, receiving gifts in an Easter basket and the Easter egg hunt. I was a little shocked to learn that some of the thing the one might assume we’ve just added to our Easter celebrations over the years actually did have a history or significant story within the church.
Easter is kind of the whole point of our Christian faith, so it’s a really big deal. It’s totally great to have fun and be silly with all the egg hunts and Easter bunny, however, it would be a huge shame to waste the opportunity to really savor and deeply celebrate what Easter really is.
You better believe we teach that and have a great time doing so with our children.
Some of my other favorite ways to incorporate the true meaning of Christ’s death and resurrection into our other Easter celebrations are to use resurrection eggs to help the kids remember all the pieces of the story. These eggs are filled with tiny symbols of different pieces of the Easter story and as the kids open their eggs they have fun putting them in order to retell what they stand for. We usually hide these with all the other eggs full of goodies and let the fun unfold as they open all their eggs at the end of a hunt.
We also have had fun hiding one egg empty to represent the empty tomb in the past too.
One last resource we love to pull out yearly is the book, The Garden, The Curtain and The Cross. It is beautifully illustrated and does such a wonderful job of teaching the true meaning of the season.
Fun Easter Traditions
We’ve covered several of the commonly known Easter celebration ideas, but I have a couple ideas to share that you might enjoy too.
In the past, pre-kids, my husband would go along with my deep passion for holiday traditions even though we didn’t have kids yet. Turns out it is actually pretty fun to dye eggs as an adult too. Long ago we did what we are good at and made it competitive. One of my favorite memories of those early years is of us dying eggs with some friends. We each got four eggs to dye, chose our favorite, took pictures of the favorites individually and posted it to social media. We posted a poll and set a time limit. The egg with the most votes won and its creator got a cash prize.
It was a blast and if I remember correctly, I won.
We will probably do this with our children when they are a little older and thrive off competition like their parents. For now, though, this is reserved for mom and dad because we’ve already learned the art of losing graciously.
A fun easter tradition I plan to start this year is to actually decorate for the season. In years past, I think I’ve been so tired from all the Thanksgiving and Christmas activity that I have done a poor job of really elevating Easter to that same level. We have always celebrated, but have never really created the anticipation that Christmas gets with decorating and really cherishing the season as a whole. As I mentioned earlier, Easter is the whole point of the Christian faith. That should be celebrated as deeply as Christmas. This year I plan, to include my family in decorating our home as we prepare our hearts to celebrate what the Easter season really means to us.
One last fun Easter tradition that I would like to start this year is to host an Easter brunch with friends. I suppose this is inspired by Friendsgiving. I think inviting a close group of friends who walk intentionally through life with us to celebrate the gift of what happened on the cross sounds lovely. If this is something you would like to try too, know that it can be as lavish or simple as your heart desires. Host it all yourself or make it potluck, but remembering hospitality as we rest and savor God’s goodness is one of the sweetest things. Easter is communal after all.
Easter Celebration Ideas at Home
Our Easter celebration at home will begin a month prior as our family decorates in anticipation of the season. On Easter morning, we wake up to a special Easter breakfast of cinnamon rolls, bacon, eggs, biscuits and gravy and fruit. A spread full of favorites from all the family members. The kids will find Easter baskets left for them with a few gifts that include things they will actually use and they will also notice that eggs have been hidden in the yard to go gather in their baskets too. In the following section, I will link several ideas for basket filler and activities for families.
After breakfast, attending our Easter morning church service is one of the most special parts of our celebration. Nothing puts the gift of salvation into perspective like worship and to be part of that on this specific day is just so special.
After church, the family eats lunch and follows that up with a day full of playing outside, enjoying each other and resting together. In past years, our family always went camping at a river property with my husband’s side of the family. We no longer really do this on this specific weekend because families really wanted to take the chance to create Easter traditions. However, one the things my husband and I loved about those family gatherings over Easter weekend was that it always included a fish fry. We’ve decided a sweet way to honor our family members who have passed and hold those memories close is to have a fish fry on Easter. I realize this is unique to our family, however I love the sentimentality of the meal. We are also usually over ham and turkey after all the gatherings for Thanksgiving and Christmas, so we love that this stands alone in holiday menu traditions.
